The Vermont Parole Board has five major responsibilities:

• To interview offenders eligible for parole and either grant or deny parole.
• To interview an offender on Supervised Community Sentence, upon expiration of the minimum sentence, and either grant parole, continue the offender under Supervised Community Sentence until the expiration of their maximum sentence, or terminate the offender from supervision altogether.
• To conduct hearings involving parolees or Supervised Community Sentence offenders who have allegedly violated conditions of their release. The Board decides in these hearings if the violations have been substantiated by substantial evidence and decides the appropriate course of action.
• To conduct parole eligibilty reviews for offenders who are not appearing before the Board in person.
• To conduct hearings for offenders recommended for early discharge, and for modification of parole conditions.
